This English R&B act are among the first Brits to start making authentic Motown-style music in the mid-60s. They were also accepted in the Jazz world too.
They formed in a coffeeshop in Bayswater in 1967, and named themselves after the rehearsal rooms in the basement of the buildings nicknamed The Foundations.
They were spotted by a record exec a few months later, and before they knew it their first single Baby Now That I’ve Found You was put out. It was picked up by Radio One and suddenly the group was hailed as the first UK original soul band. It was followed by the equally successful Build Me Up Buttercup.
The in 1968 original vocalist Clem Curtis left to star a solo career in America and was replaced by Colin Young.
The group’s third and final hit Born To Live And Born To Die was less poppy, and finally they split in 1970 when the rythym section broke away to form a new band called Pluto.
Build Me Up Buttercup became a hit again in 1998 when it was featured in the ending credits of the hit comedy There's Something About Mary, starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz.
