Ice Skating Tips
If you are going ice skating for the first time, or have forgotten what to do, take a look at our tips below to get the most out of your session.
-
Don’t Lean Backwards!
- Keep your knees bent and your weight forward – this stops you leaning back.
- If you’re having trouble keeping your weight forward, put your hands on your knees, or keep your hands in front of you.
- Don’t let your hands creep behind you or it will force your weight backwards.
- Try and push your weight through the balls of your feet, for best balance. Skating is almost like walking.
- Get used to taking small steps on your skates then eventually you will be able to glide each step and skate.
- It is also really important to get used to transferring your weight from one skate to the other, making sure you can balance on each leg.
- Keep your head up when you are skating.
- Be confident and enjoy yourself!
- If you do fall it is better to land on your hands than your head! That’s why you keep your weight forward.
- If all fails hang on to the side for dear life. Or hang on to a friend who can skate.
- Don’t try skating really fast towards the side and hope you will stop in time - if you don’t stop it hurts.
- Don’t try skating the wrong way round the rink as you’ll end up hurting yourself and others.
