Cloverfield, a low-budget Godzilla-style horror movie produced by the guy behind Lost, scared up a monstrous $41 million opening at the US box office over the weekend.
The film – which has a cast made up entirely of unknown actors - only cost $25 million to make in the first place.
Insiders had expected it pull in around $20 million.
In second place was romantic comedy 27 Dresses – which stars Katherine Heigl -with a take of $22.4 million.
Last weekend's number one movie The Bucket List fell to number three with almost $15.2 million.
Meanwhile teen-pregnancy comedy Juno slipped one to fourth place with $10.3 million, taking its total to $85.4 million.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets fell one to number five with $8.1 million – the adventure movie has earned $198 million to date.
