Hollywood stars dazzled in red as the 80th annual Oscars got under way.
Dame Helen Mirren, Heidi Klum, Anne Hathaway, Katherine Heigl and Miley Cyrus were among those who chose elegant red dresses to wear in front of the hordes of television cameras lining Hollywood Boulevard.
A hastily-erected tent protected the actors and actresses as wind and rain threatened to dampen the ceremony.
Red was the colour of the night as Dame Helen Mirren wore a dark red Georges Chakra floor-length dress, actress Anne Hathaway wore a bright red one shoulder Marchesa dress with rosette detail, and model Heidi Klum looked elegant in a red Galliano dress, which will be sold at auction for charity later.
He told E!: "What a great night for really intelligent film-making."
Hannah Montana teen star 15-year-old Miley Cyrus also wore red, choosing a champagne-tail design with a floor-length hemline.
Pregnant Jessica Alba wore a strapless Marchesa dress with Cartier jewellery while Juno star Jennifer Garner wore a black strapless dress with a tail, offset by a large diamond necklace and bracelet.
Cameron Diaz wore a light pink simple off-the-shoulder Christian Dior floor-length dress with Bulgari jewellery, while Hilary Swank wore a black one-shoulder Versace dress.

Thousands of screaming fans saw the stars arrive at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, where security was tight as snipers took their positions on nearby rooftops.

Hollywood's biggest night went ahead after a writers' strike which crippled the entertainment industry and reduced the Golden Globes to a glorified press conference was resolved earlier this month.
Daniel Day-Lewis, who was nominated for best actor for his role in There Will Be Blood, said he did not like to watch his completed films as he spoke to reporters on the red carpet.
He told US TV channel ABC: "I watch it while it's being put together, but once it's done I feel like it's none of my business any more."
One of Daniel's rivals in the best actor category, George Clooney, led his girlfriend Sarah Larson down the red carpet more than two hours before the ceremony was set to start.
He joked that he never got tired and never had a bad day as he stopped to wave to fans and speak to TV presenters.
George told entertainment channel E!: "It's a fun one this time because it's a film we're all really proud of so it's easy to be here and be a part of this."
Asked why he was so active with various charitable projects around the world, he said: "If you get the opportunity to do it and you don't, I think it's shameful.
"I think it's mostly about waking up and being able to look yourself in the mirror."
28-year-old Atonement star James McAvoy said it was "incredible" to be at the Oscars.
