It’s Coming Home, it’s Coming Home…!

It’s a funny old game... I rarely talk about footie on my show, but just to set the record straight, I am a season ticket holder down at Portsmouth. And this weekend we’ve (actually that makes it sound like I had some part to play in the whole thing) or rather THEY’VE made a bit of history. For the first time in my life, having knocked Man Utd out of the FA Cup, Pompey are going to play at Wembley.

Not only that but, rather scarily, they’re now the favourites to actually win the trophy. The world’s gone bonkers!

It’s all brought back memories of when I was a wide-eyed 7-year-old. I remember some family friends visiting our home one day & me being told by my step-father that this guy had been to an FA Cup final. To a footie-breathing child, this was the most amazing thing I’d ever heard. I’d never met anyone who’d actually been to a Cup Final before. What’s more, I can still recall him fixing his gaze on me & telling me that one day I’d go to a Cup Final too. Now, being a Pompey fan, this seemed as likely as Greg Rusedski winning Dancing On Ice. But finally, this weekend, my little team moved to within one match of coming to pass. In fact, as the semi-finals are played at Wembley, at least I’m going to have one part of my long-held dream come true. The closest I’ve got to Wembley before has been taking Mrs G. to see Take That! Lots of fun, I’d be the first to admit, but not quite a Cup Final.

So, as you might imagine, it’s all been a bit emotional for me this weekend. I wouldn’t wish to rub it in to mega-trophy-winning Man Utd fans, but for now I’d just like to say... wooo-hooo!!

Here’s to the semis & maybe, just maybe a place, at last, in a Cup Final.
