I can't believe this. Last night I was on the phone to a great friend of mine who's in Los Angeles for an hour and fifteen minutes! You know how I know that, because I didn't time it on my watch. When he called, I paused The Apprentice on Sky Plus, and it said -75 minutes by the little "pause" symbol.
How brilliant is Sky Plus. I remember only about 4 years ago, this person telling me about a new thing you plug into your tv, and it pauses "live" television. So you could be watching the news, pop it on hold, go to the toilet or pay the pizza bloke at the door, come back and pick up where you left off. "No way", I think was my response. It's genius.
I must get sorted though, with that feature which lets you call the Sky Plus on your phone, and set it to record from your mobile. So then if you go on holiday and realise you've forgotten to record your fave show, you still can. Brilliant! How easy is life nowadays. With every new advance in technology, another day of your life is rescued.
I was on the phone for so long, as I hadn't spoken to this mate of mine for ages. You probably know him....or used to listen to him on Heart. Chris Farrell.......? Top top bloke. Alterego, Dr Glitz. Used to fill the Clapham Grand every Saturday night. Rumour is, the "Glitz" might make one last appearance in the coming months! Watch this space. It was a legendary 70's retro night back in the day. So many people went along to see it.
Anyway, a truly great friend. We mucked about like teenagers the whole time. At work, when were all out at night, just having a good time. We went out with these two girls who were also best friends. It was like that. Then he met this very cool young lady, fell in love, got married and went to live in America. And he's settled really well out there. Totally made up for him. But you know when you "lose" a really good friend, and you miss them. Close friends are important. But then, one of you meets someone, they go off and live their own lives together, and all of a sudden you don't have that relationship anymore. Happens to all of us at some point i'm sure. But is difficult to get used to at first. It was for me. Especially as they left Chiswick (round the corner from me) for America! I can't just pop around to Beverley Hills for a coffee.
What's so nice is when you get over that slight empty feeling, and embrace the new, happy situation they're in. I could only wish my great friend Chris the happiest of times over there. He sounds very happy in his own skin, and i'm delighted for him, for them both.
Some people you lose touch with. Some you don't, and never will.
(you can stop the "Our Tune" music now)
