The Geordie duo confounded predictions of a public backlash by winning three awards at last night's glittering ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall.

They were named most popular entertainment presenters and their reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! won most popular reality programme.

Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, one of the programmes involved in the ITV £7.8 million phone rip off, got the award for most popular entertainment programme.

The BBC picked up six awards to ITV's five, while Channel 4 walked away empty-handed.

Sci-fi drama Doctor Who won two awards, most popular drama and most popular actor for David Tennant.

EastEnders won two awards, beating its rival Coronation Street to the best soap and also scooping most popular actress for Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater).

The X Factor took the award for most popular talent show, defeating Andrew Lloyd Webber's Any Dream Will Do.
